Mexican Confetti Eggs

Posted: 9 March 2010

Cascarones (Confetti Eggs) are a Mexican Easter favourite. Filled with confetti and brightly decorated, cascarones are traditionally broken over friends and relatives' heads on Easter Sunday to bring them good luck. However, if you can't bear to break them, they make a perfect table decoration.

Cascarones are fun to make and can be a good way to get children involved in Easter preparations. Here's how to do it. If you're doing this with children, stages 1 and 2 should be done by an adult.

  1. Use a sharp knife to open the top of the egg carefully; tip the egg itself into a bowl, without cracking the shell.
  2. Rinse out the inside of the eggshell.
  3. Fill the eggshell with glitter, confetti or strips of silver foil, place a little glue around the edges of the opening and close it carefully.
  4. Once dried, use acrylic paint, craft paint or a specialist egg dye to decorate the egg.

Why not rustle up some delicious Huevos Rancheros with the eggs you've used.
